Reinforced concrete (RC) drainage pipes are the foundation of urban drainage, road runoff systems, and infrastructure throughout Thailand. This guide covers the essentials for engineers, contractors, and procurement officers.
Standard: TIS-128-2560
Thai Industrial Standard TIS-128-2560 covers:
- Round reinforced concrete pipes
- Diameter range (D): 0.30 – 1.50 m
- Standard lengths: 1.00 / 2.50 m (custom available)
- All sizes require compressive strength and 3-edge bearing testing
Sizes and applications
| Diameter | Primary use |
|---|---|
| 200 mm | Residential connections |
| 300 mm | Soi (small lane) drainage |
| 400 mm | Secondary road drainage |
| 600 mm | Main road drainage |
| 800 mm | Under-road crossings (DRR / DOH) |
| 1000 mm | Community drainage |
| 1200 mm | Major drainage lines |
| 1500 mm | Highway / bridge crossings |
Joint types
RC pipes come in two main joint designs:
Bell-and-spigot
- One end widened (bell), the other end tapered (spigot)
- Standard for general drainage
- Easier to install, more economical
Tongue-and-groove
- Both ends have matching groove and tongue
- Higher watertight requirement
- Best for irrigation work and deep underground pipes
Engineering specifications (TIS-128-2560)
- Concrete compressive strength ≥ 240 ksc
- Reinforcement SD40 / SR24 per spec
- Concrete cover ≥ 25 mm
- Testing compressive strength + 3-edge bearing per TIS
Installation procedure
Correct installation:
- Prepare trench — excavate to design depth, lay 10-15 cm compacted sand bed
- Lay pipes from outlet end — start at outlet, work backward
- Join sections — apply sealant, push pipe firmly into bell
- Backfill — use sand or non-cohesive soil, compact in layers
- Test — flow test for leakage
Pricing factors
RC pipe pricing includes:
- Size is the primary cost driver (cost increases exponentially with diameter)
- Joint type — tongue-and-groove costs 8-15% more than bell-and-spigot
- Quantity — discounts start at 200+ pieces
- Delivery distance — within 100 km of Pathum Thani: no transport surcharge
Selecting a supplier
- Current TIS-128 certification
- Owned factory (not a reseller)
- Auditable QC system per production lot
- In-stock popular sizes
- Verifiable government project track record
